About Pack 26

Pack 26 is a Cub Scout Pack and is part of the Old Colony Council of the Great Ponds District of the Boy Scouts of America.

Pack 26 History
Many years ago there was a Pack 26, and perhaps some of you who lived here as children might remember it. Our former Cubmaster, Patti Williamson, remembers that her mom was a den leader in Pack 26. At some point the pack stopped operating due to slumping membership nationwide. In 1996, Pack 26 restarted with about 10 boys – when Pack 77 in Canton grew too large. Currently we have about 35 Cub Scouts.

We are proud to say that we have a strong group with leaders (parents) committed to making scouting fun and educational. We look forward to your involvement as well.

Today, there are two Cub Scout Packs in Canton: 26 & 77.

And there is one Boy Scout Troop: also number 77 (which sometimes causes confusion!).

Cub Scout Ranks – called Dens:
DEN 5 – Tiger – First Grade
DEN 4 – Wolf – Second Grade
DEN 3 – Bear – Third Grade
DEN 2 – Webelos I– Fourth Grade
DEN 1 – Webelos II – Fifth Grade

At about halfway through the Fifth Grade, Webelos-2 Cub Scouts “crossover” to become Boy Scouts.

Fee
The fee for a year of Cub Scouts in our pack is $75, which we collect in September. This covers the cost of awards for your Cub Scout – such as pins, belt loops, patches and trophies. It also covers Pack programming costs. And it also covers the cost of “Boys Life,” the legendary monthly magazine that each Cub Scout receives. The fee will be $70 for current scouts; there is a sibling discount of $10 per child.

United Church of Christ
The United Church of Christ has generously offered to let us hold our meetings there and we do our best to leave it in the same or better condition as we find it. We help them in the spring with their annual yard clean up and in February there is a Scout Sunday service (at UCC and at St. Gerard’s) at which they recognize the Cub Scouts. All are welcome to attend even if you aren’t a member of their church (only a few in the pack are). We do a bake sale in the hall after that service.

The church asks that we don’t roam the halls and other rooms or play on the CCK playground in the back yard at any time that we are on the premises. We prefer that children stay out of the kitchen, not climb trees outside or play outside unattended, and stay off the stage (except during Talent Show!).

Pack Meetings
Pack meetings are once a month usually on a Friday night and are held at the United Church of Christ starting at 7 pm till approximately 8:30 pm. There are also usually 1 or 2 pack events per month that everyone is welcome to attend; for example, a sporting event, a camping trip, a cleanup at the church, a hike, parades, visit to police station and more.

Awards that the scouts have earned up to that point are handed out at pack meetings and families are welcome; Scouts are not dropped off. We usually have a game, craft, or entertainment at these meetings as well as light Refreshment. Dens take turns providing the refreshments and being responsible for clean-up.

Den Meetings
Dens meet 1-2 times a month and work on Achievements in the Handbook for their rank (Tigers, Wolves, Bears, or Webelos). Tigers may meet less often and attend every meeting with a parent. One of these parents will be the Tiger Leader. The other ranks have 2 parents who will be the Leader and Assistant Leader. Leaders will plan activities for the meetings; however the other parents should contribute ideas for outings & activities, and help their share with these.

Parents do not necessarily need to stay at these meetings (you may be asked to help with particular activities requiring adult help, for example: wood working, pocket knife handling, etc. or asked to stay if the group is particularly rambunctious) It will be helpful to look through the book to know what to expect.

Generally, more of the achievements are worked on in den, though some activities will need to be done at home.
